Evonik is one of the world leaders in specialty chemicals. The company is active in more than 100 countries around the world and generated sales of € 13.1 billion in 2019. Evonik goes far beyond chemistry to create innovative, profitable and sustainable solutions for customers. More than 32,000 employees work together for a common purpose: to improve life, today and tomorrow.
The focus of the business of the Nutrition & Care division is on health and quality of life. It develops differentiated solutions for active pharmaceutical ingredients, medical devices, nutrition for humans and animals, personal care, cosmetics, and household cleaning. The Animal Nutrition business line serves one of Evonik’s key end markets.
We have been well-known for our high-quality feed additives for decades, and also for our customized solutions, services and digital tools. Our experts are available onsite with specialized knowledge and experience to help unlock the full value of our customers’ business.
With offices in more than 50 countries, Evonik ensures maximum responsiveness and service quality, guaranteeing availability of our products to customers in more than 100 countries. As Animal Nutrition business line, we maintain more than 10 labs on five continents that provide NIR and wet-chemistry services, placing leading analytical capacity for amino acids and other nutrients at our customers’ disposal. This ensures quick turnaround and accurate assessments of raw material quality, enabling feed mills to formulate consistently high-quality and cost-efficient feed.
With our portfolio of essential amino acids and other advanced nutrition solutions, we allow feed producers to create more efficient and sustainable diet concepts, such as ideal protein, and support livestock farmers in their antibiotic-free strategy. To avoid waste of relatively costly micro-ingredients, we have developed handling solutions that maximize dosing accuracy. This makes it possible to reduce safety margins while still guaranteeing enough amino acids to meet livestock needs.
With manufacturing plants on three continents and more than 50 warehouses worldwide, we can deliver reliably – on time and the right quantity. Our customers count on us, not only for excellent products, but for the entire package that combines for the best results.
Which industry sectors are your customers in and which ones are growing fastest?
Our customers come mainly from the agriculture and livestock industry.
What are your most recent product innovations?
Porphyrio® is the new standard for cloud-based data management systems for the poultry industry. Porphyrio® adopts a three-step approach – it monitors daily production, predicts performance of flocks and plans production output. The aim is to enable optimized poultry production along the complete value chain.
Following an animal-centric approach, Porphyrio® supports the daily poultry production management by using Big Data, Biostatistics and scientific self-learning algorithms. A variety of customizable software solutions offered by Evonik improves poultry production and product quality through holistic monitoring of relevant parameters and a smart early warning system which notifies arising problems. What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding?
The world population is growing – and with it the demand for meat, fish, milk, and eggs. Our goal is to provide as many people as possible with access to high-quality, affordable animal protein produced with due regard for animal welfare and limited natural resources.
We work closely with farmers, which means that we can see firsthand how much pressure they are under from the demands of consumers, the food industry, authorities, consumer protection agencies, and environmental organizations: Meat is supposed to be available in large quantities, it has to be cheap, tasty, and uncontaminated. The animals are expected to be fine. Production is supposed to have as little impact on the environment as possible. And in the end, the farmer must also be able to live from his work.
The aim is to increase productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of production all at once. To achieve this, many things need to change in animal nutrition, animal health, and farm management. This requires innovative, holistic solutions. We are in the process of developing such science- and data-based solutions. This helps us to clearly differentiate ourselves from the competition. “Sciencing the global food challenge” is our ambition.
Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances?
We are building a system house: The foundation is built by our proven amino acid products, our feed formulations for low-protein animal nutrition diets. Products like MetAMINO®, Biolys®, ThreAMINO®, TrypAMINO®, and ValAMINO® improve the productivity of animal fattening, relieve the animal organism, and reduce nitrogen emission. Various AMINO services and tools support the exact supplementation of feed mixtures.
The level above comprises our solutions for healthy sustainable nutrition. This includes solutions for specific requirements in livestock farming: The probiotics from Gut Health Solutions – Ecobiol®, GutCare®, Gutplus®, and Fecinor® – are helping to refrain from using growth-enhancing antibiotics in poultry and pigs. The algal oil from Veramaris and the methionine derivate AQUAVI® Met-Met enables the rearing of edible fish and crustaceans in aquaculture without using fish oil and fish meal. Mepron® is our methionine solution for ruminants and GuanAMINO® is a creatine source to enhance performance.
Another level higher is Precision Livestock Farming, our solution for the digital transformation of poultry farming. This is where a completely new business model is emerging. It is based on software and services for feed analysis, farm monitoring, and gut modeling. Our knowledge in the field of animal nutrition is to be marketed here as a consulting service. The available solutions from our own development and via acquisitions are called Porphyrio®, ScreenFloX®, and OPTIfarm where we are holding a minority share.
Our advantages over our competitors: We understand our customers, think holistically, use our scientific expertise to develop innovative solutions and offer safety at all levels through quality products and a global production and logistics network. We are a science-based solutions provider for sustainable animal protein to feed healthily a growing world population.
Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts and how you helped the customer meet their challenges?
Our NIRS calibrations help customers beyond their regular feed milling operations recently. Just currently, the usage of our NIRS technology in an oil-meal processing plant has significantly helped our customer to streamline his whole process and eventually standardize the quality of the oil-meals for animal feeding.
Even our annual crop report consisting of the amino acid profile of Indian origin raw materials for feed has helped many mid-sized customers to improve their nutritional matrix of raw materials and eventually nutritional efficiency.
What’s the latest news from your company?
Evonik’s venture capital arm has invested in a Chinese technology start-up that enables more intelligent and healthier pig farming, that uses Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things to improve farm efficiency and animal welfare.
Evonik has become exclusive distributor of ProPhorce™ SR 130 in Southern Africa & Indian Sub-continent. This partnership will help us to offer a full gut health portfolio in the region.
